「Honam Ouisa Yeol Jeon」 is a collection of biographies on patriotic soldiers by Ki, Woo-Man(1846-1916). Ki, Woo-Man was born in Jangsung in 1846, and is a grandson of Nosa Ki Jeong-Jin. After grandfather Ki Jeong-Jin died, Ki, Woo-Man inherited his spirit of Wijung Chuksa(defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy) and published an anthology. In 1896, he raised an army in the cause of national defense in Jangsung, but it was dismissed. In 1905 when Eulsaneukyak was concluded, he sent up an appeal to the throne to ask an order to punish Eulsaojeok(5 enemies in Eulsa Year).
He wrote 「Honam Ouisa Yeol Jeon」 where achievements of patriotic soldiers in Honam were recorded for descendants. It recorded a total of twelve soldiers: Ki, Sam-Yeon, Kim, Yong-Ku, Kim, Bong-Gyu, Park, Gyong-Rae, Kim, Jun, Jeon, Soo-Yong, Kim, Young-Yeop, Kim, Ik-Jung, Kim, Chi-Gon, Park, Young-Geon, Jeong, Won-Sook and Sung, Gyong-Soo.
In the 「Honam Ouisa Yeol Jeon」, he characterized the patriotic soldiers as follows: protecting civilians, resisting against Japan based on fidelity to their country, being faithful to other soldiers and protecting each other, and getting into rage against injustice with righteous spirit.
The characterization is related to his thoughts on patriotic soldiers. That is, he thought that patriotic soldiers should be sympathetic with civilians, and stick together with them, and practice justice.
His thought had an effect on the awareness of the next generations on them and his 「Honam Ouisa Yeol Jeon」 has meaning of literary history in that it shows diverse ways to write biographies on them. That is, this study suggests that his consciousness on patriotic soldiers and narrative style present problems to description of biographies on patriotic soldiers focusing on fighting power and results.
