  • Research on social capital has shown that entrepreneurs’ social contacts can affect the success of their ventures. An assumption across different studies on social networks and entrepreneurship is that social contacts anticipate approaches from sociable, skillful, and strategic entrepreneurs capable of connecting and obtaining benefits. In this research, we relax these assumptions and argue that exchanges between people with different levels of resources are not that simple. Feelings of envy, social injustice, insecurities, and depression can obstruct how people perceive and relate to others. We believe our study will shed new light on social networking as a dialectic process between individuals’ self-perceptions and affective responses to other people. We draw on insights from social comparison theories, facework, and selfconcepts. To that extent, in our study we expect to find that constant social comparison will hinder the likelihood of entrepreneurs engaging in active social networking and therefore of entrepreneurial action. However, we also discuss individual and social aspects that will decrease this negative relationship so that entrepreneurs can strengthen their social networking skills and make social magic a reality through entrepreneurial actions.

  • Abstract
We draw on insights from social comparison theories, facework, and self-concepts.
  • Research result and Utilization method
  • On October 17 2017, the research team submitted an abstract of the research to one of the flagship conferences in Entrepreneurship, the 38th Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC) (http://www.babson.edu/Academics/centers/blank-center/bcerc/Pages/home.aspx). The conference will be conducted in Ireland in June 6-9, 2018. Upon acceptance, the team will be presenting the results of the research in this conference.

Another potential conference to submit part of the results of the research is the Academy of Management (AOM) 2018 (http://aom.org/annualmeeting/). The submission deadline for this conference is in January of 2018.

Moreover, if the schedule allows it, the research team will present the results to the entrepreneurs that participated in the project, with the help of the two CCEI offices in Daejeon and Sejong. These presentations will depend on the availability and interest of these two offices of sharing the preliminary results of the current project.
