There are three purposes of the study. First, this study attempted to categorize sport for development(SFD) program in Korea based on several criteria. Second, this study aimed at investigating empirical evidence on the impact of SFD progam as well as evaluating the aspect of operation by selecting Pyeongchang Dream Program which is a representative SFD program in Korea. Lastly, this study attempted to examine some issues and problems of domestic SFD programs and then provide development strategies for future SFD programs. Based on these three purposes, this study found the following three main results.
First, almost all SFD programs in South Korea are/were operated in three forms such as (a) SFD programs from sport-related institutions (e.g., Ministry of Culture, Sport, and Tourism) (b) SFD programs from special institutions for assistance (e.g., KOICA, EDCF), and (c) SFD programs based on international mega sporting events (e.g., Pyeongchang Winter Olympics). Second, this study reveals that Pyeongchagn Dream program exerts macro-level, meso-level, and micro-level effects. In addition, The Dream Program, for the most part, well corresponds with the five components of SFDT (impact assessment, organizational component, sport and physical activity, educational component, cultural enrichment component) in terms of management and organization. Lastly, most of Korean SFD programs mainly followed the concept of ‘development of sport itself’ rather than the concept of
‘development through sport’ which is the focal point of SFD movement.
