제국주의자 혹은 식민주의자가 아닌 인본주의 작가들이 쓴 조선견문 창작텍스트를 통해 조선과 조선인의 일상적인 생활상을 타자의 시선과 타자의 문화로 관찰하여 과거와 현재 우리문화를 재조명한다. 한 국가나 국민을 표방하는 문화정체성은 그 국민 스스로가 내린 정의와는 별개로 외국인의 시선을 통해서도 성찰할 수 있다. 약 120년 전, 프랑스작가들의 눈에 비친 한말 조선의 문화를 그들의 창작 텍스트를 살펴봄으로써 우리 자신을 타자의 시선으로 새롭게 조감하고 한말 격동기 시대를 살았던 당시 조선의 역사와 문화를 아울러 현재의 한국문화 정체성을 천착해서 되돌아 볼 수 있다.
The Korean Culture observed by Western People shows different aspects about us. The acute logs they recorded are very useful data to introspect ourselves. While looking at Chosun and the common life of people through the observation records with the culture of the Other and the view from foreigners, the mirror image is endowed to us. The self-identity representing a country or citizens can be creativelty observed throughout the culture of others, which is different from the definition made by citizens, themselves. In the dimension of the comparative literature that foreigners and Chosun people had, it is possible to specifically observe and illuminate us in multiple aspects. The preservation of the peculiar Korean artistic world and aestheticconciousness should be preceded beyond the regret and passion about the Korean traditional culture that is being broken and disappearing. In addition, it is also important to keep the Korean unique culture and identity consistently and harmoniously in the stream of the global era and worldwide culture.
