This study discusses <The Coronation of the Virgin> that was produced from the 13th to 14th century in Italy. Chapter Ⅱ discusses the social background, during the end of 13th century to the 14th century when Papal authority dwindles, focusing on Italy based on the fading of political rhetoric and more emphasis on the
mendicant orders. Because of the Black Death, the local war, the famine, many peoples are terrified. The mendicant friars preached a sermon on intercession to the Virgin Mary. In Siena, Florence, Venice, the rich cities dedicated their cities to the Virgin Mary and made a various festival. The <The Coronation of the Virgin> was represented for the ritual of the Virgin Mary.
In the Chapter Ⅲ, we deal with the Santa Maira Maggiore in Rom, the Siena Cathedral and the Prato Cathedral. They are painted in the narrative structure of Death ,Ascension and Coronation of the Virgin Mary. The Chapter Ⅳ treats the Giotto's <Baroncelli Polyptych>, Agnolo Gaddi' s two works, Paolo Veneziano's three works. In conclusion, the new characteristics of <The Coronation of the Virgin> is used as an ornament to embellish the altar, it consolidates its role as a part of church architecture and escapes the narrative structure of Death and Ascension of the Virgin Mary. As the scene of <the Coronation on the Virgin> becomes a independent scene, more attention to Heaven is given.
