Abstract

Han, sung-il. 2003. A Study on the Use of Online Communication Language Using Questionnaire Survey. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea, 11(2). The objective chatting rooms and the current state of the use of communication language on the internet using a questionnaire survey. Important content among the questionnaire results can be summarized as follows. ① University students use less swear or slang than middle or high school students. This means that middle and high school students use swear or slang as a popular language, and they control themselves not to use it as they grow up. ② A problem of computer chatting conversation, 'destroy of our language', 'use of swear or slang', as well as 'meaningless conversation' or 'rough conversation' were pointed out. ③ When they used their real names, they used much less lying, exaggeration, swearing, etc., but hardly tried to speak properly to the language standard. ④] The younger they are, the more they use commutation language as the popular language. ⑤ The reason why they use communication language might be understood as a kind of 'language selection' to adapt to the communication environment as well as a principle of economic efficiency and expression. Therefore, communication language has to be accepted as a social dialect and education for its efficient use is needed.
