In this paper it is the main objective to study the transformation of North Korea socialist agricultural collective farms into market-oriented co-operatives. The collective farms are formed to establish one nationwide organization and to gain control over the various ideologies and corresponding property rights with the aim to be able to clearly formulate the essence of socialist consciousness and to put this into practice in people's day-to-days lives. In the process of building the socialist society and its planned economy, the collective farms are politicized, officialized and finally socialized for the masses. If the farms are to play a continually important role in the market economy, it is indispensible to restore co-operative values and principles which have been either lost or were severely infringed during more than 50 years of planned economy.
