Where the question of modernity matters, the idea of culture becomes central. With its concern on the fusion of individual perfection and social integration, the idea of culture has been established as the dominant value and ideology in modern bourgeois society. This essay, which reads D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers as a Bildungsroman, proposes to elucidate how this contradictory nature of culture as perfection and integration is symbolically represented in the work. In opposition to the general idea of modern literature, which tends to make any supposed totality in literary works outmoded, and to foreground themes of division and fissure of self and society, Lawrence tries to revitalize but not to wholly abandon a vision of totality in his work. Hence the importance of the Bildungsroman frame to this work. Sons and Lovers can be interpreted as a significant attempt to realize some possibilities of a cultural ideal which assumes totality of self and society. Focusing on the contradictory effects of acculturation represented in this work, this essay explains how it is different from, and even opposed to, ordinary Bildungsromans, and how, through its adaptation of the traditional narrative form, it ascertains the basic desire for culture to realize an impossible unity of self and society.
