본 연구는 수의 이해에 대해 유아의 자발적 표현이나 묘사를 유도할 수 있는 활동과제를 개발하여 시행한 후, 유아들이 나타낸 결과물의 분석을 통해 표출된 유아의 수에 대한 영상적, 상징적 표상능력의 발달적 특성을 밝혔으며, 동시에 수 표상능력을 활용한 교육적 활용방안의 모형을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 3∼6세 유아 190명을 대상으로 실시되었으며, 연구결과에 의하면 영상적, 숫자나 기호적, 언어적 표상에 있어 각각 4 수준으로 범주화될 수 있었으며, 3세 유아는 그림표상능력, 4세 유아는 그림과 언어적 표상능력, 5∼6세 유아는 언어와 숫자표상의 획득과정에 있는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 유아의 이러한 발달수준에 적합하고, 수학적 사고와 이해의 표상활동을 강화할 수 있는 구체적인 교육활동이 계발되어져야 할 것이다.

This study investigates the development of number representation of young children based on their drawings, writings, and verbal comments about the concepts of more, fewer, and same in relation to quantity. One hundred and ninety children from three to six years of age were selected from two public kindergartens and two day care centers in rural areas of South Korea. Children's responses were charted according to four levels of development in three different categories of representation: pictorial, symbolic, and verbal. The study revealed that children's development in the three categories of number representation corresponds to their ages. Three-year-olds are in a developmental phase of pictorial representation, four-year-olds are in a pictorial and verbal, and five-to six-year-olds are in a verbal and symbolic. Based on these findings, learning activities to stimulate and assist young children in their development of number representatian in the three categories are presented.
