오늘과 같은 국제화 시대에 필수 불가결한 생존 도구로써의 영어 구사 능력이 그 중요성을 날로 더해가고 있는 시점에서 우리 나라 대학의 영어교육은 이러한 시대적 흐름에 발맞추지 못하고 낙후되어 있다. 이러한 상황의 타파를 위해 최근 국내에서도 컴퓨터를 이용한 외국어교육(CALL: Computer-Assisted Language Learning)이 많은 관심을 끌고있으며 이에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. CALL분야에서 가장 큰 장점으로 주장하는 상호작용이라는 것은 우리가 생각하는 면대면 상호작용(face-to-face interaction)과는 근본적인 차이가 있을 뿐만 아니라 자율학습(autonomous learning)이나 협동학습(collaborative learning) 등의 외국어학습의 새로운 동향도 이에 대한 이해의 부족으로 엄밀한 의미에서 CALL수업의 설계 및 적용에 제대로 반영되지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 인터넷을 이용한 상호작용적 영어교육 프로그램인 MOO(Multi-User Dimensions Object-Oriented)를 이용한 영어 학습활동을 설계하고 구현하여, 학생들에게 부단한 자극을 주고 동기유발을 시켜 목표언어 뿐만 아니라 목표문화의 학습까지도 가능케 해주는 효과적인 영어 학습방법을 개발하고, 나아가 이 분야에 좀더 실질적인 도움을 줄 수 있고 깊이 있는 연구를 위한 자료와 정보를 제공해 보고자 한다.

This study aims at introducing the effectiveness of MOO(Multi-User Domain Object Oriented) as a tool for learning English. Since the early nineties, educational MOOs have captured language teachers' attention as they provided learners with a collaborative and autonomous learning environment where students could interact with native speakers, other learners, and instructors. During these early years, however, users had to master considerable technology to use the MOO including basic MOO commands and MOO programming usually through telnet connection at slow speed. This prevented language teachers from adopting MOOs to language learning. Today, with the advent of web-based(webbified) MOO, users are allowed to readily use the MOO with a minimal number of commands to be effective, thereby the efficiency of language learning is considerably enhanced. SchMOOze University MOO was employed because this MOO server allows enCore Xpress interface which provides the telnet/java window in a web browser. This study also aims at providing a guideline for the adoption of MOO to an actual college English class, offering ideas and practical considerations about how you can actually use SchMOOze MOO to enhance student learning.
