영국과 미국에서는 이미 몇십년 전부터 영화가 영문과의 중요한 강좌 중의 하나로 설강되어오고 있다. 그러나 우리 나라 영문과의 커리큘럼은 거의 몇십년 동안 정전에 속한 작품들로 주로 구성되었으며 대중문화나 영화를 진지한 학문의 대상으로 취급하는데 조심스러운 태도를 보여왔다. 영문과의 수업 시간에 비디오를 비롯한 시청각 보조자료를 사용하는 교수들이 늘어나고 있음에도 불구하고 영화의 미학, 영화의 문법, 영화의 메카니즘에 대한 전문적인 지식이 없기 때문에 영화를 단순한 문학의 보조자료로만 사용하는 수준에 그치는 경우가 많다고 할 수 있다. 영화를 수업에 사용하는 것은 우선 영화에 대한 기본적인 지식의 바탕 위에 이루어져야 하며 영화를 어떻게 해석하고 가르쳐야 하는지에 대한 지식과 방법론에 대한 이해가 없다면 그것은 피상적인 접근에 머무는 한계에 봉착하게 될 것이다. 본 연구는 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해 현재 영국이나 미국의 영문과에서 어떠한 영화 과목들이 어떠한 목적을 가지고 설강되어 교수되고 있는지 조사한 다음 그것이 국내의 영문과의 실정에 어떻게 접목될 수 있는지의 가능성을 탐색해 보고자 한다. 이러한 조사와 연구를 통해 문학 강의 보조자료로서의 영화, 문학과 영화, 영화이론과 비평, 영화 장르, 다문화주의 영화등 여러가지의 영화 강의의 모델을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.

It has been a long while since American schools treated film as a serious subject for academic research and established film classes as a legitimate course and program in universities. Despite this trend in the United States and a widespread interest in film among the Korean students, the academic community in Korea has been slow to incorporate the film studies into the curriculum of the English department. Recently, however, there has been a growing tendency among the teachers of English literature to use films as supplementary texts in order to enhance the students' understanding of literary texts. This paper aims to provide some suggestions on how to utilize films in the English classroom.
First, films can be used as supplementary texts which help students' to grasp the general outline of stories and characters. In this approach, the emphasis is placed on the literary text. Second, in a class on adaptation theory and practices, students can compare and contrast the original literary texts with the film adaptations, thereby studying the different signification systems in both media. Third, in film theory courses, students can read major film theories, such as narrative theory, psychoanalytic theory, and feminist theory, and apply them to individual films. Fourth, a course on film genres will enhance students' comprehension of different genres and their messages. Fifth, films can also be used as a text through which we can study a specific culture which produced those films. For example, by looking at films through the perspective of multiculturalism, we can understand how issues of race, gender, and class shape American culture and how these issues are reflected in films.
