This study compares the ritual of dances performed in formal occasions in two different cultures yet in the same period, in Goryeo Dynasty and in the middle ages of Europe (mainly in Italy and France, during 9-13 centuries). The differences and similarities in ritual dances performed in two different cultures are compared to see the implications for dance history research. In the Western history, the dances in the middle ages had given religious influences. Those performed in Italy and France during the late of the middle ages that the arts movement initiated and was the transferring time to the Renaissance were the fetus of the royal party dances in the Renaissance and ballet later time. In Korea, the early of the Goryeo Dynasty was the turbulent time to move from United Silla Dynasty to the new country and many formal dances were performed for religious purposes of Buddhism. This time is seen as an important period for research as the structure as a ritual dance performance was set up and a form of composite art performance was established. Therefore it is crucial to see the common features in the dances shared by the two different cultures in terms of their social political functions and artistic meanings. It will be supported by investigating the historical backgrounds of developing these dances and their contents, movements, and religious philosophy. Furthermore the facts that these dances were reestablished as the ritual dance to be performed and that the certain styles of the dance became visible are discussed based on their historical factors. Although there are differences in the cultural backgrounds and contents of the occasions where the dances were performed, the fact that there are also similarities in the roles of the dances may implicate other countries’ cases for emerging ritual dance and its roles in the society. The study uses the literature analysis method. The researcher reviewed empirical data and concrete evidence as much as possible. In the light of the social and artistic backgrounds of the two cultures revealed by the previous literature, the styles of royal parties and of representative dance performances of these cultures are analyzed in order to investigate the frames of the dances such as structures and movements and the contents of them including their religious philosophy, social political functions, and contributions to the composite arts. This information will be valuable to improve the research on dance history. There are few studies that compared the ritual dance in the middle ages (9-13C) of Europe and one in Goryeo. There are some studies on each of them but neither much on comparing between both nor focusing on the historical and cultural backgrounds. Therefore this study is initiated with the intention to solve these problems from previous studies. The study, firstly, looks at the social and artistic backgrounds of the two cultures as the time was a full of potential before the Renaissance in the 9-13 centuries. Next, it is discussed that one became a fetus of the ritual dance and the other advanced into more systemic and composite arts. Thirdly, the similarities in the social roles of those dances in terms of the occasions where the dances were performed are discussed. Their characters in the structures, movements, religious, social political and artistic features are horizontally analyzed. The Western dance here refers to those performed in Italy and France that were the main of Europe and where the Renaissance was initiated. This study goes beyond comparing the two dances in Goryeo and Europe (Italy and France, mainly) and exams the relationship between the formation of the dances and their social political backgrounds in terms of ‘comparing two different culture dances performed during the same period’. The study is meaningful as the historical features and styles are explored for the basis of the horizontal comparison of dances between two different cultures. This study also contributes to lightening the meaning of dance in the current society by providing with the opportunities to reconsider the role of dance which can be sought even in the time when performing arts were suppressed.
