This paper aims to examine gender, power and desire issues in the English renaissance poetry, focusing on Wyatt, Surrey and Donne. English renaissance is the period of dramatic social and political change and has some analogy with our own age and culture. Elizabeth Heale argues that the writings of Wyatt and Surrey, ambitious courtiers in the Henrician courtly world, can speak to us with extraordinary vividness of the desires and terrors, the manoeuvres and evasions, that attended success or failure in their world. In attempting to reinterpret the past, we will reread the poems of the courtly poets of the 1530s and 1540s and of Donne through the perspective of our own concerns in the present. In their poetry, we can see power and sexuality are so closely interrelated. New explorations of power, gender, ideology in the Renaissance not only have provided radically new understandings of Renaissance texts but have forced us to reexamine the critical, historical, and cultural presuppositions on which our readings are based. Songs and Sonnets contains Donne's most complicated exploration of love and embrace the various fields of philosophy, astronomy, law, medicine, sexology, and theology. It is easy to find in Donne's Elegies the characteristics of the beginnings of the English expansionism, such as the analogy between the female body and the colonial territory. Donne satirizes Petrarchan idealizations of women, and rejects classical representations of the female body.
