Honor is the most valued emotion which results from the evaluation and the respect of human oneself and others, who are rational and social beings. Hence, honor has been considered as a virtue which humans should have, regardless of the type of organizations, in order to keep their social activities that are harmonious and balanced. In that sense, philosophers have considered honor as 'one of the best virtues that should be pursued.'
In this study, it has been considered how honor was defined philosophically in the Greek and Roman societies where honor first appeared, and how people at that time behaved to save their honor. Particularly, in this study, the concept of honor and duty of the thinkers from ancient Greece and Rome, such as Homeros, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Epictetos, and Aurelius, has been closely analyzed. While analyzing their concept, it has also been made clear that why and how the importance of honor was raised. Furthermore, it has been verified that honor is not in the realm of the right that human beings insist, but in the realm of duty which is required more when they go up to the noble position.
In this study, the honor of the Greek and Roman era has been discussed as a humane basis which allows human beings to overcome social disruption, the uneasiness from the future, and the radical moral hazard. Moreover, it is a basis which prepares a new value consciousness and moral attitude. On the basis of this concept of honor, the direction that our human beings should head for has also been discussed.
