A Research of the Categorization of Joseon Yi-Jing Studies and Their Development of Ideas
The major purpose of our research is to categorize the early Joseon Yijing studies in terms of diagram/picture, righteousness/principle, and image/number. The research will be a primary work for constructing a systematic philosophical study of the whole Joseon Yijing studies. In relation to this topic, prior researches focused on specific texts or scholars, and as a result disregarded other significant texts or philosophers that contributed the development of the Yijing studies. In addition, a number of existential research works devoted themselves to the issue of morality so that they failed to propose a clear picture of how the Yijing studies were developed and changed in their original forms.
Therefore, our research team categorized the early Joseon Yijing texts from a perspective of diagram/picture, righteousness/principle, and images/numbers, selected representative six scholars in each category, and researched their ideas for three years. In the process, we found that some of the texts are hard to be attributed to a specific category, but it was meaningful to analyze the early Joseon Yijing texts in terms of the three categories.
From a perspective of history of the Yijing studies, the Joseon scholars did a primitive research by introducing and researching Chinese works, specifically, Chengshi yizhuan (程氏易傳), Zhouyi benyi (周易本義), Yixue qimeng (易學啓蒙), and gradually suggested their original interpretation and research. In particular, scholars since the mid Joseon period attempted to reconcile differences between the ideas of Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi, or suggested their creative ideas beyond the two philosophers. Later the Joseon scholars before Dasan introduced different trends of the Yijing studies of the Ming and Qing while overcoming the traditional category, and criticized them and established their original ideas.
As the outcome of our research, we published 16 articles in Korean journals, and one is in process in one of the A&HCI journals (Characteristics of Zhu Xi’s Thoughts on Divination, Dao, ), and two articles will be submitted to a Korean journal. In the first year of our research, 5 articles were published in the special issue (No. 40) of the Philosophy of Asian Philosophy, which is one of the representative journals related to Asian Philosophy.
In addition, our research team presented our papers in China (第1回 韩国易学研究团 韓中專家招請座談會), Taiwan (首屆“中國與韓國的易學”高層論壇), and U.S.A. (The Yijing(Classic of Change) in Korea and China), and introduced the Korean studies of the Yijing to other academic world. In the process, we not only introduced the Joseon studies of the Yijing abroad, but also have a chance to know the academic trends of other countries, and merged them with the Korean studies of the Yijing.
