Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication refers to real-time, intelligent communication between connected machines, devices, and people. As a key technology for developing numerous Internet-based services, M2M communication creates an infrastructure for networked machines to autonomously exchange information and perform actions anytime, anywhere without manual assistance. Through the proliferation of smartphone users and increased accessibility to intelligent sensors, M2M communication is anticipated to revitalize the stagnant telecommunication market and create new values in various industries.
Despite the potential benefits of M2M, the technology also carries some risks. For example, even though M2M based advertisements help consumers and companies exchange personalized advertising messages, consumers face the risk of exposing one’s personal information. M2M also raises concerns over managing technological errors and social problems such as addictions from playing M2M-based digital games. Similar to a double-edged sword, even though M2M has various social and industrial benefits, it also has the risk of damaging people’s quality of life.
Risks must be addressed and acknowledged; yet, it should not deter the potential benefits that M2M technology provides. If consumers continue to deny the use of M2M-based technological advancements or if the technology does not meet the expected standards of users, researchers and industry experts will need to provide systematic responses and prepare long-term blueprints to ensure the adaptation and stabilization of the new technology. However, there is limited research that comprehensively approaches the benefits and risks of M2M communication. This research thus tried to provide an integrative understanding of the risks and benefits of M2M communication. Systematic, in-depth analysis of consumer M2M technology acceptance and anticipated social effects were measured.
To fully research and understand consumer responses and technological effects of M2M communication, experts in engineering, media, consumer behavior, and business management were required. Therefore, this research was comprised of a team of scholars in media, engineering, advertising, and business. Comprehensive research was conducted to thoroughly analyze M2M communication. For instance, consumer acceptance was measured after researching consumer, supplier, technology, and policy aspects of M2M communication. Advantages and disadvantages of M2M were examined to fully understand the M2M industry and the ecosystem.
The hard work was demonstrated through the paper accomplished using the guidelines of SSCI. The study actively used domestic and international networks and endeavored to establish an integrated community of new researchers.
