This study was conducted to compare the oral traditions of Funny Story with Discourse of Laughter. The results of the research are those:
First, I studied about narrative structure of the oral traditions of Funny Story and the written of Funny Story. As speakers of the oral traditions of Funny Story and compilers(or writers) of the written of Funny Story are in different narrative position and situation, the method of narrative and attitude of narrative are different. As a result of the study, in the oral traditions, the speakers narrated substances which are essential to deliver and understand the story. This means that it is fundamental for the speakers to hand down the story he listened faithfully.
On the other hand, the compiler of the written story function as a translator or an interpreter. So they add or delete some elements of the story and recast the existing story to correspond with their ideological point of view. Also, they help the readers to understand well by giving necessary explanation, ancient event, background, etc. beforehand and, they added own estimation at the and of the story.
In addition, because the oral traditions of Funny Story is narrated in front of audience, it was focused on arousing laughter and tried to make punchline at any costs. Besides, the written of Funny Story was focused on logicality or structure of the story and it usually did not have punchline.
Second, I studied about the target of laughter. The oral traditions of Funny Story, which was passed down among pop polloi, poked fun at not only ruling class like county magistrate or master but subjugated class like monk, seller and family. Besides, the written of Fun Story usually poked fun at ruling class, especially premier, elderly, bureaucrat and sometimes military or friends. At laughter, who was targeted is important, but what was poked fun is also important, The oral traditions poked fun at lack of qualification of the person which is vital at their life. On the other hand, the writing poked fun at lack of erudition or business ability. Also, they both poked fun at avarice, sex and stinginess.
Third, I studied about the method of arousing laughter in oral traditions and written of Funny Story. It is very important because they make audience exciting by making fun and interest. The typical method of it is twist. Also, the oral traditions used methods like overstatement, repetition and gradation, but the writings usually used figures of speech to cause laughter. In addition, the oral traditions used mimicry, codology and wit, but the writings used codology and wit to cause laughter. Caricature is one of the typical method, too. So, the oral traditions have more stories of fool than writings.
Fourth, I studied about the characteristics of the oral traditions and writings of Funny Story. The oral traditions poked fun at the ruling class, but they often poked fun at subjugated class or family. So, aggression also heads to interpopulation or family. At the writings, the aggression of laughter also heads to friend or wife. Like this, it heads to same group of people because the laughter is based on thingy conflicts. So, in case of subjugated class, they poke fun at their family or person in same group who come into more conflicts in actual life. And this aggression is bilateral rather than one-way.
It is usual to poke fun at social system or custom in stories. It means expression of the audience(or readers)’s cognition about the system or custom. The oral traditions tend to have a negative view of the system and custom, but the writings tend to keep them.
Fifth, I studied about the laughter’s meaning and function of the oral traditions and writings of Funny Story. The oral traditions mean flaw of people who get along, and negation and resistance to ruling class and social system. And because they are focused on laughter, they are abundant of laughter and fun. These laughter and fun make the oral traditions keep alive and be recreated. On the other hand, the writings tend to keep systems, customs and order of Confucianism. So, they emphasis lessons inherent in stories. Therefore, they are fun, but because it is hard to cause laughter, it is hard to enjoy the thrill that laughter gives. Because of this reason, it seems hard for the written of Funny Story to keep alive and have forces of production.
