The purpose of this study is to examine the historical characteristics of the Hyangyak Terminology in Hyangyak Jipseongbang published by Haengnimseowon (henceforth, HHJ), based on the analysis of the Hyangyak Terminology system and diachronic distinctiveness. Furthermore, it is to make foundation for the future studies by constructing information-oriented Hyangyak terminology database. The main results of study are following:
1) The analysis of Hyangyak Terminology : There are 701 items in HHJ, formed with Sino Terminology, another Sino name, borrowed Sino characters writing, native Korean Terminology and another Korean name. And there are 850 native Korean Terminology including another name, which are targets of analysis. These vocabulary were classified 10 hyperonym, the order of frequency is ‘plant > animal > mineral > man’. And the 'man' class was not subclassified.
2) Setting up classification of Hangyak Terminology : This work is related to morphological analysis. Therefor, this study had classified Hyangyak Terminology with few steps. Firstp, as word tyoe, all Terminology is divided into Sino and native Korean Terminology. Second, native Korean Terminology is classified into 'word-tyoe' and 'explanation-type' considering traditional Hynagyak Terminology form. ‘Explanation-type’ is not genitive construction; ‘gunggungmyo’(Sino), ‘siru’(native), ‘tteoksoegaru’(compound), ‘deowijigi’(derivation), ‘gotjibeseomugeunssal’(explanation) etc.
3) Constructing an information-oriented Hyangyak terminology database : DB frame based on the information of HHJ, reflecting the results of morphological analysis. So, it contains ‘a head word’, ‘another Sino word’, ‘borrowed Sino characters writing’, ‘native word’, ‘explanation information’, ‘morphological information’, ‘classifying system’, ‘indication’, ‘origin’, ‘bibliography’, ‘registration’; for example, ‘車轄- 車所也只-suresswaegi-guldaebitjjang-mettugisoe-石部中品-鄕名-鄕成 77:594:3’ etc. Furthermore, it will reflect subclassifed into grammartical morpthem.
4) An synchronic analysis of Hyangyak Terminology : First, this study made a list by discovering dialrect form; ‘bulchi-’, ‘nwibeondegi’, ‘jeoguri’ etc. Second, digged new words and tracked meaning; ‘supameori’, ‘heukbeon’, ‘tteumbaejil’, ‘aetbo’, ‘jangbeolheuk’ etc. Third, founding an unique morpheme; ‘ajebegwajilnamu’, ‘mettugisoe’. Forth, discovering the words which were registered in dictionary pyo as ‘Munhwaoe’; ‘pissal’, ‘hochong’ ets. These words must be reconsidered.
5) An diachronic analysis focusing on History of individual word : First, discovered 259 new Hyangyak Terminology; which were divided into 171 ‘word-type’ and 88 ‘explanation-type’, and this is 37% of total 850 words. Second, made a list of another native-Korean and found new words; ‘silpumi’, ‘yajima’, ‘gwana’, ‘papnunmul’, ‘badamandaljji’, ‘seotdureupnamuggeojil’ etc, but the origin and the meaning of these words are obscure. Third, compared with the Medical books published in Early Modern Korean; Dongeuibogam, jejungsinpyeon, euijongsonik. There are 6 types of common ownership, and the most frequent common ownership was betwween Dongeuibogam and HHJ by 153 items. It is obvious that HHJ was influenced by Dongeuibogam. Forth, it is revealed that roughly a half of Hyangyak Terminology was not registered in Pyojungugeodaesajeon.
6) A complement of Hyangyak terminology database : An information-oriented DB of HHJ will be the base of constructing '‘Total Hyangyak Terminology DB’ by offering very important materials and information.
Finally, the Hyangyak Terminology in HHJ collected the traditional Hyangyak Terminology and included Modern ones. So it is a sort of compilation of Hyangyak Terminology. Especially, it will roles a historical connection. And it have so many new morphemes and words which form and meaning are obscure, so it is a treasure house of the history of word. In the future, if ‘Total Hyangyak Terminology DB’ was completed, the description of History of individual word and history lexicon system will be possible.
