Since selected as the recipient of a large-scale Social Science Korea (SSK) project of the National Research Foundation of Korea, the Research Center on the Commons and Sustainability (RCCS) at Jeju National University was established in September 2017. RCCS set its research project as "the Commons and Sustainable Society" and intended to realize the strategy of expanding and actualizing the commons for the critical needs of ecological transformation. To this end, the following studies were conducted: first, research on the Jeju commons for publicly governing the commons; second, research on the expansion of the types of commons for social transformation; and third, research collaboration within East Asia and internationally. The details of each research project and the relevant research publications are as follows:
First, RCCS has researched the commons for publicly governing the commons. Detailed sub-topics for this research are as follows: research on the Jeju commons, such as common meadows, common fisheries, Gotjawal, spring water; research on the relationship between the Jeju village communities and the commons; interdisciplinary, integrated study on the socio-historical transformation as well as on the change of the commons in Jeju. The publications of research findings are as follows: Jeju, the island of the commons I; Jeju, the island of the commons II; Jeju village and the commons; Transformation of Jeju society and the commons; Community, commons, and local innovation.
Second, RCCS has researched the expansion of the types of commons for social transformation. As a result, RCCS could expand horizons in commons research beyond natural commons to various kinds of commons, such as food, energy, care, education, culture, knowledge, and information, which are all essential components of citizens' lives. The publications of research results are as follows: Theory of the commons, asking about today's Korean society; Theory of the commons, proposing an ecological constitution; Types of the commons; Towards an ecological welfare state; Social innovation, being twisted.
Third, RCCS has conducted research collaboration within East Asia and internationally. Also, RCCS has translated international research findings into Korean and English. The objectives of those translations were to contribute to Korean as well as international studies on the commons. The publications in Korean are as follows: The commons in East Asia; Modern Total Property Theory; Economics of social common capital. The publications in English are as follows: Revisiting the commons in South Korea; Commons perspectives in South Korea: context, fields, and alternatives, which will be published in early 2022.
