This study was intended to provide basic data on the development of a rational physicalexamination system that is gender-related by suggesting the improvement of the standards for male and female physical fitness tests following the abolition of the gender separation recruitment system for police officers.
Therefore, the standards for male and female physical fitness tests were investigated through interviews with incumbent police officers, and the standards for male and female police physical examinations were compared and analyzed through literature studies in the standards for male and female physical fitness tests in the United States, Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Japan were analyzed.
The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, most police officers said that men and women should apply the same event, same standard regardless of gender, and that the minimum standard of physical fitness standards should be the same for men and women.
Second, among the U.S. National Police Agency, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) conducts physical fitness tests for sports, and the minimum standard varies depending on gender and age, and the lowest standard's total score is 160 points, which requires at least 40 points for each sport. In addition, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Physical Fitness Test (JST) consists of circular inspection items and must pass the prescribed course within 4 minutes and 28 seconds. This standard applies equally to men and women. Third, the physical fitness test of men and women of foreign police, including the U.K., properly utilizes circular and event-style methods according to the security environment of each country. In the case of adopting the physical fitness test for sports, it was found that the physical examination for men and women was conducted in the same category and the standard was implemented in a different condition, recognizing the differences in male and female physical abilities. In addition, when adopting a cyclical fitness test, the uniform standards are applied to men and women in the same event, and in the examination event, the basic ability of the police to perform their duties and cope with the situation in an urgent situation, and all physical tests shall be conducted within a fixed time limit.
The minimum standards were found to be applied equally to male and female applicants.
Therefore, it would be appropriate to adopt the current method of measuring sports, if the nation's new police selection physical examination aims to identify the applicants' basic physical strength and the minimum level of physical strength required in the police school curriculum. However, the standard differences and measurement methods between men and women need to be improved. However, considering the security environment in which resistance to public power increases and the problems of the police physical fitness test due to the selection of male and female unity, it is also necessary to introduce a circular physical examination. In the final suggestion, if the police's physical ability in their duties is required, and if the standard should be applied, they should set a unified standard, not a difference between male and female standards, and provide equal opportunities if the standard is passed, male or female.
