[Purpose of Research]
This study aims to achieve the following research goals.
1. Through a study on the literature of Manchukuo(僞滿洲國), this study attempts to examine the commonalities and differences between concept of ‘Manchukuo’ and ‘Northeast’literature, and examine how ideology and historical context influenced in the process of academicization of the two concepts.
2. By exploring large sample of the Manchukuo literature, this study attempts to study the relationship between elements of ‘nationality’ and ‘locality’ contained in Manchukuo literature.
3. By examining the different academic discourses of Manchukuo literature in each country, and considering coexistence of various ethnics in Manchukuo during the war and colonization, analyze how these are connected with the 'national identity' and 'regional identity' of Manchukuo.
4. Understand the way how discourse about 'Manchuria' corresponds to the current Chinese government's cultural policy and propaganda, and through this, consider how ideologies of 'Asianism', 'Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere', and 'Ideal Manchuria(滿夢)' are linked with the current Chinese 'New Normal', 'Universal System', and 'Chinese Dream'.
5. By exploring the 'ideas' prevailing in colonial era Manchukuo, this study tries to re-examine the modernity of contemporary Asia, and reconstruct Western-centered view of modernity.
[Research Content]
This study was intended to reflect the existing research perspectives of Manchukuo literature in both Chinese and Korean academic field, and to suggest a new reading for systematization and expansion of Manchukuo literature. For that, this study starts with a review of the status of research over Manchukuo literature in China and Korea, and then tries to suggest means to expand the research scope for the future. In addition, through a detailed reading of the Manchukuo literature, this study attempts to define the notion of locality inherent in it to extent not discovered before.
The detailed research content and schedule were as following.
<1st year>
At the beginning of the study, various interpretations and analyses for earlier published research were conducted, focusing on the academic discourse over ‘Manchukuo'. After that, study evolved to intensive examination of the relationship between idea and notion of ‘nationality’ and ‘locality implied in the Manchukuo literature, and how they are connected with 'national identity' and 'regional identity' of Manchukuo. Later, this study expanded to discourse in modern China on 'Manchuria', and how it is linked with the cultural policy led by the current Chinese government and the ideological theory of the intellectual circles in China.
<2nd year>
On the basis created during first year of work, this study looked back at the problems on the existing research of 'Northeast literature', which largely maintains a standardized and fixed research perspective based on the national imagination, and considered the limitations of the current research on the Manchukuo literature. In particular, the elements and intentions of the ideology encompassed by the concepts of 'Northeast literature' and 'Manchukuo literature’were identified.
To overcome and explain these problems, the contents of various heterogeneous localities inherent in Manchukuo literature were discovered later through study of comprehensive of writings. Finally, based on the aim of ‘Reading and critical examination of the literature of Manchukuo,’ this study tried to read carefully the selected Manchukuo literature, and create organized list of selected literary works for translation.
