This study attempted to find answers to the following two questions through the analysis of early Joseon records(the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, 朝鮮王朝實錄) and metal type printed books. First, why did you choose metal type technology? Second, what characteristics does metal type printing have in the early Joseon Dynasty? It was China that first started the concept of type printing, but it is undeniable that metal type printing was selected and activated in Joseon, which had a writing system with China.
It is difficult to determine exactly when type printing began in Korea, but in general, type printing has been prevalent since the early 13th century. The case of type printing in Goryeo and the actual type fully show that type printing was being carried out not only in the center but also in the provinces, regardless of the level of printing. There are no related records on the selection for such metal type printing technology of Goryeo.
In Joseon, where metal type printing is considered the most active, there is no record of what was the reason for choosing type printing. Therefore, among preceding researchers, it was interpreted that the reason for choosing metal type printing was due to the advantages of metal types. In short, type printing was considered a suitable method for printing a variety of small-volume printing compared to woodblocks. Or, if printed in type, the book could be printed quickly. In other words, the choice of metal type printing in Joseon was understood in the situation of the times faced in the early days of Joseon's founding.
Accordingly, in this study, metal type printing records and printed books in the early Joseon Dynasty were analyzed to analyze why metal types were selected and how they were used. The experience of printing metal types during the Goryeo Dynasty was significant for Joseon rulers. In addition, the metal type printing records of the Joseon Dynasty's Annals and the list of metal type printing books in the early Joseon Dynasty showed the characteristics of metal type printing in the early Joseon Dynasty.
In conclusion, it could be seen that at least metal type printing in the early Joseon Dynasty was used within all ranges necessary to prepare the system order in the early Joseon Dynasty. In other words, the choice of metal type printing in the early Joseon Dynasty was not because it was suitable for small-volume printing of various types. It can be seen that the discussion of previous researchers needs to be revised, and at least it cannot be applied to the situation in the early Joseon Dynasty. Metal type in the early Joseon Dynasty was used as a technology that could print all books regardless of the nature or amount of books.
