This study aims to reveal the multi-layered “entanglement” that exists in the human-animal relationship based on the new perception of life and ecology emerging in the post-human era. And to achieve the purpose, ecological politics cases, human-animal interaction process, related theories and technical methods were considered. Through this, we build evidence and present a research approach to restructure the human-animal relationship in the post-human era. Through this, the foundation for policy was prepared and related specific research results were accumulated to continuously pursue the convergence of natural science-based animal research and humanities&social science-based animal research.
During the period of this study, the 'COVID-19 pandemic' had a great impact on the entire society. Our research team tried to identify new issues in the human-animal relationship, such as COVID-19, that are unfolding in the present era. The following series of online seminars were held to find immediate problem-solving methods and values. A total of four consecutive webinars were held from June to July 2020. The title is “Belationships and Borders: Humans and Animals in the Post-COVID-19 Era”. A total of 14 speakers, including humanities sociologists, veterinarians, natural scientists, and field activists from inside and outside the research team, participated in the seminar and discussed various perspectives and topics. After the webinar, revised and supplemented presentations and manuscripts on topics determined to be additionally necessary were collected and published as a book with the same title as the webinar. The title of the book is 『Relationships and Boundaries: Humans and Animals in the Corona Era』 (Podobat Publishing House, 2021).
In the second year, based on the theoretical basis of the first year, the focus was placed on the implementation of post-human human-animal relationship-centered empirical research. Furthermore, in order to connect such research to the field of education, the Basic Research Institute at Seoul National University opened the <Human and Animal> subject in the fall semester of 2020 as a “Convergence Topic Lecture”. This lecture was held for 3 semesters until the 2022 academic year. In this lecture, co-researchers conducted lectures. Finally, in the 3rd year, 'A Book for Beginners in Human Animal Relations', which serves as a textbook for this course, was published. The title of the book is 『In the arms of Animals: Human-Animal Relationship Study” (Podobat Publishing House, 2022).
In the third year, the “2021 Human-Animal Relations Book Seminar Invited by Overseas Scholars” was held up to the 5th time. The recent international status of the study was shared and insights were explored together. This content has been compiled into interview records and book reviews and published in the Journal of Science&Technology Studies. Even after the research period is over, we are continuously inviting foreign scholars who are exerting international influence in the human-animal field. And through this book seminar, we are continuing to explore various perspectives and expand academically.
