본 연구에서는 고향의 개념을 의미론적 측면과 지리학적 입자에서 정의하고, 한국 사람들이 고향이라고 시칭하는 고향의 공간적 대상, 고향에 대한 감정과 선호, 고향의 지리적 특징 및 이미지 등을 조사하여, 이를 중심으로 한국인의 고향에 대한 애착의 본질과 정서를 밝히려 하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 한국인의 고양에 대한 애착은 본질적으로 고향의식과 회귀본능과 같은 고향에 대한 인류의 보편적 정서로부터 나온 것이다. 둘째, 이러한 보편적 정서 위에 한국의 사회적 배경에서 나오는 고유한 고향의식이 첨가되었다. 사회적 배경에서 발생된 고향에 대한 강한 애착은 효에 근본을 둔 유교적 전통, 남북분단, 도시화에 따른 광범위한 실향의 결과에 의해서 형성된 정서하고 볼 수 있다. 셋째, 고향이미지는 이러한 한국인의 정서를 반영하고 있으며, 자연환경적, 인문환경적, 감각적 요소가 모두 수렴된 전령적이며, 푸상화된 유형으로 나타난다. 넷째, 한국인의 고향에 대한 정서는 인간의 본성으로부터 나오는 보편적 정서와 대체로는 일치하지만 개인이나 집단의 인구, 사회적 배경과 공간적 체험에 따라 서로 다른 것으로 나타났다.

While dwelling on the delicate subjec of 'sense of place,' U.S. naturalist Paul Shepard(1967) persuasively observes that 'The environment is encountered in a wat in which self and place are related.' Now an environment wherein the intuitive self-place relationship developles most intimately is of course the existential domain called 'home.' which readily conjures up the image of happy childhood and inevitable nostalgia owing to the ephemeral nature of innonence.
Although universal, the notion of home has an especialy strong hold on the Korean psyche as eloquently demonstrated by the massive annual exodus of urbanites 'going home' during the harvest season called Chusok. The magnitude of this cultural phenomenon is such that even the march of lemmings would pale before it. What is tha magnetism of kohyang, though, that not only causes such a seasonal frenzy each year but also constitutes a major theme in great many literary works and popular songs? As an endearing home base, kohyang certainly engenders the self-place relationship and, with its unique geo-cutural characteristics such as topography, flora and fauna, colors, sounds, smells, sights, human relations, and memorable events, kohyang sither real or remembered also is deeply tied to the ethos of Korean as a people particularly today when the forces of rapidly mechanized, urbanized civilization compells them to look for ways to recover their preindustrial pace of life and identity both personal and social of life, that is, the prototype of life that works as a mirror, as it were, in their consciousness. And herein lies the merit of an endeavor to probe into the relationship between their ethos and the geographical attributes of their lebensraum.
