After China joined the WTO(World Trade Organization) in 2001 and became an economic powerful country, there has been a Chinese craze in many countries including Korea. Although foreign language learners have learned Chinese for a long time, there are many problems when communicating with native Chinese. These problems occur due to the lack of knowledge in linguistic components, and also because of insufficient understanding in Chinese culture. For instance, the word ‘解放(liberation)’ is differently understood by Koreans and Chinese. For Chinese, ‘解放’ means 'the establishment of People's Republic of China', specifically in 1941 October 1. For Koreans, however, 'liberation' refers to 'gaining sovereignty under the Japanese imperialism'. In other words, it reminds of the 'National Liberation Day', specifically 1945 August 15. Thus, when saying ‘解放前(before liberation)’, Chinese acknowledge it as before 1949 October 1, Koreans as before 1945 August 15. For both Koreans and Chinese, ‘解放’ can be an obstacle when communicating.
Therefore, this writing will analyze the social and culture components that can be unfamiliar for foreigners, but basic knowledge for the Chinese. In order to arrange these components, it is important to determine the range of Chinese people's basic knowledge. Generally, as things learned from compulsory education takes account most part of people's basic knowledge, foreigners should understand the social and culture components that appears in elementary school books. This is the first step to learn the Chinese basic knowledge. This writing will orgainize, categorize, and analyze the social and culture components of 『品德与生活』, the compulsory curriculum for elementary school year 1 and 2 students, among the series of ‘品德’.
It will first arrange the Chinese social and culture components that appeared in the textbook. Next, find the Korean word that corresponds to it, and explain some points on each components, such as the reason for its creation and the background information. This will help those foreigners, who learn Chinese as their second language, to gain enough understanding in Chinese culture, and reduce the hardship when communicating with native Chinese. Moreover, this writing will offer a chance to get closer to the Chinese culture, especially in communicating culture, by understanding the components.
