Some Jeon(傳) written in the late Cho-sun korea has been regarded problematic with the reason that those have the contradictive two aspects. The purpose of this dissertation is not to define these works either Jeon or novel but to appreciate these works being equipped with the formal style of Jeon and fictional imagination of novel. Additionally I would like to make these works catagorized as 'Jeon style short narratives' and then grasp the its own indepentent specialty which can be distinguished with others Jeon and novel.
In chapter Ⅱ, firstly I examined to contrast between the discourse of 'Jeon style short narratives'. Through this, 'Jeon style short narratives' has been verfied as the self-narratives related with the identity of narrative-subject.
Jeon has been written by literary man with the specific purpose to honor the character and initiate them to the descendants in the history. Given that discourse is the way to represent the object, Jeon is the objective-oriented discourse.
On the contrary narrative-subject of Jeon maintains an objective distance from the character and events on the ground of an accurate record, narrative-subject of 'Jeon style short narratives' take an active hand in the story by appearing in the works. And also narrative-subject narrate oneself rather than character. In short, 'Jeon style short narratives' is a kind of self-narratives interested in the identity of narrator indeed.
In chapter Ⅲ, I examined how the aspect of character, time and space represent sameness and selfhood in Jeon style short narratives. There are two aspects in 'Jeon style short narratives'. The first, 'modeling': narrative-subject eradicates a character's defect or any doutable facts which are not coincide with the Confucian value. It is character modeling to make a "concept frame" which is viable to understand the individual. The second, 'realization': When the character is contrary to the Confucian value, in order to understand that, narrative-subject make existence of character to real.
In part two, I examined the how the sbjective-oriented discourse appears in time of 'Jeon style short narratives'. The confucian rule is the standard of distinction between self and other. The rule is considered to be applied to the whole members of society and should be constant from the past to the future. But if Confucian rule is interested in the dizzy present time, the constance of Confucian rule would be suspected. Therefor, the important thing is to find out selfhood of subject which exists in the past, present and ever future.
In part three, I examined space aspect of 'Jeon style short narratives.' The first, Narrative-subject identify sameness through the distinction with others on the basis of the Confucian rule. Therefore, recognition through Confucian rule, will be concluded either obeyance group or dis-obeyance group. In this case, sameness would be understood as a group consciousness. On the other side, selfhood is established when we concede that the other is another subject and keep an eye on their relations. With this, selfhood is not defined by the rule, but established by recognition the relations with the other as another subject.
In chapter Ⅳ, I examined the feature of discourse structure in 'Jeon style short narratives' as self-narratives. Most of all, narrator itself appears as the character in the story. That is to say, narrator is narrated indeed.
As the direct result of study, partial works of Jeon in the late Cho-sun Korea which are interested in the identity of narrative-subject are categorized in 'Jeon style short narratives.' And I verified how discourse of historical writing and fiction are involved in 'Jeon style short narratives' as self-narratives. By the appreciation of the category of 'Jeon style short narratives', we are able to reconsider the peculiar quality of Korean classical narrative which has been developed traditionally based on the historical writing of our own.
